Phuket Dating Guide 2026: Beach Clubs, Old Town and Where Locals Go Out

Phuket is a holiday island first and a place where people live second, and that shapes dating here. Most of the women you'll meet around Patong work in hospitality, and many of the men chasing them are on a ten-day trip. But over the hill in Phuket Town there's a proper Thai city with students, office workers, night markets and bars where locals outnumber tourists.

This guide covers both: which part of the island to base yourself in, first-date spots with 2026 prices, the beach clubs and sunset points, the one club that matters, getting around without paying three times the going rate, and the safety rules that visitors ignore at their cost. Checked September 2026.

Before you fly

  • 30 days visa-free since 15 September 2026, tourism only, extendable once. Fill in the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours of landing.

  • Cannabis is prescription-only since June 2025. Public use can mean a 25,000 baht fine. Vapes are illegal to own.

  • Seasons matter. High season is November to April and busiest from mid-December to February. May to October is wetter, cheaper and much quieter.

Pick your part of the island

  • Phuket Town and the Old Town. Our first pick for dating. Painted Sino-Portuguese shophouses, great food, cheap rents and a local crowd. Young Thais go out here, not in Patong.

  • Kata and Karon. Relaxed beach towns, busier than the south, far calmer than Patong. A good middle ground.

  • Rawai and Nai Harn. The settled expat end: markets, seafood, yoga, dive schools and most of the island's coworking spaces.

  • Chalong. Quiet and practical, and home to Soi Ta-iad, the fitness street full of Muay Thai gyms.

  • Bang Tao and Laguna. Polished and expensive, with golf courses and big villas. Less Thai in feel.

  • Kathu. Inland, between Phuket Town and Patong. Mostly locals and long-term expats.

  • Patong. The party town. Bangla Road is a street of bars and go-go clubs. Fun for a night out with friends, not where you'll meet someone for a relationship.

First-date spots

Old Town

A walk down Thalang Road and Soi Romanee in the early evening, then dinner, is the best first date on the island. Old Town cafés mostly close around 6pm, so start with coffee in the afternoon (Campus Coffee Roasters or Graph, 85–165 baht) and move on to food.

  • Tu Kab Khao, a Michelin Bib Gourmand Phuket-style restaurant in a restored mansion. Map

  • One Chun and Raya, both local institutions for southern Thai food.

  • Kopitiam by Wilai, for a cheaper, casual meal.

  • Soi Romanee at night: small shophouse bars with live music most evenings and a mostly local crowd.

Night markets

  • Chillva Market, Yaowarat Road, Monday to Saturday 5 to 11pm. Container stalls, bars and a young Thai crowd. Map

  • Naka Weekend Market, Saturday and Sunday 4 to 10pm. Mostly locals.

  • Lard Yai, the Sunday walking street on Thalang Road, 5 to 9pm.

Sunsets

  • Promthep Cape, the island's southern tip. Sunset is around 6:30pm in the dry season and 5:30pm in the wet. Parking is 20 baht; in high season arrive 90 minutes early. Map

  • Karon Viewpoint and the Windmill Viewpoint near Nai Harn, both free and quieter.

  • Sunset bars: The Sundeck at Kata Noi, Heaven near the Karon viewpoint (affordable), Sizzle above Patong, and Baba Nest at Sri Panwa if you want to spend serious money and book well ahead.

Beach clubs

  • Café del Mar, Kamala. Open daily from 11am; the Club Room runs Wednesday to Saturday from 10pm. Map

  • Catch Beach Club, Bang Tao. Free entry with a minimum spend. It survived the May 2026 beachfront demolitions that closed several neighbours, so ignore older lists that still recommend Maya or Nomad.

  • YONA, a floating beach club reached by shuttle boat from Royal Phuket Marina. Adults 20+ after 2pm, roughly 1,000–2,000 baht.

  • Fira, Kata Noi. A rooftop beach club; about 1,000 baht entry that you spend on food and drink.

A beach club makes a better second date than a first: it's an afternoon, and it's pricey. Day beds can run 8,000–20,000 baht.

Clubs

Illuzion on Bangla Road is the big one, ranked ninth in DJ Mag's world top 100 clubs for 2026. It's open 9pm to 4am, usually free before 11pm and 500–2,000 baht on big DJ nights, smart casual, 20+, and they check passports. Café del Mar's Club Room is the more grown-up alternative.

Meeting people

  • parkrun. A free 5 km run round Nai Harn Lake every Saturday at 7am, with coffee afterwards.

  • Muay Thai and fitness. Soi Ta-iad in Chalong has Tiger Muay Thai, Dragon (300 baht drop-in) and plenty more. Gyms are where a lot of long-stayers make friends.

  • Coworking. Day passes run 200–375 baht in Rawai, Chalong and Patong.

  • Island days. Phi Phi (ferry 450–600 baht each way plus a 400 baht park fee) or James Bond Island (tours 1,400–3,500). Maya Bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September.

The apps in Phuket

ThaiFriendly is the busiest app on the island, with a younger crowd. ThaiCupid users are older and more likely to want something long-term. Tinder is full of other tourists in high season. Set your location to Phuket Town rather than Patong if the app lets you, and meet somewhere busy and well known. Our app rankings and ThaiCupid review go deeper.

Getting around (and what it costs)

  • Taxis are the big expense. Fixed fares from Patong to Kata or to Phuket Town run 500–600 baht. Grab and Bolt are usually 30–50% cheaper, and Bolt tends to undercut Grab. App drivers operate in a grey area and some taxi ranks resent them, so be discreet about pickup points.

  • Scooters. Rental is cheap, but you need a motorbike licence (home licence plus an International Driving Permit) and a helmet for both of you. Fines since June 2025: 2,000 baht for no helmet, 1,000 for no licence, 5,000–20,000 for drink-driving. Most insurance won't cover you without a licence.

  • Food and drink: street food 40–80 baht, a Thai restaurant 100–200, Western meals 250–600, local beer 70–100, cocktails 150–600.

A good date in Phuket Town with dinner and a couple of drinks costs 1,000–2,000 baht for two. The taxi there and back can cost as much as the dinner, which is one more reason to stay in town.

Safety that actually matters here

  • The sea. Phuket had close to 40 drownings in 2025, including three in one day in June at Kata, Karon, Surin and Bang Tao. When the red flags are up in the wet season, don't swim. That goes double after drinks.

  • Jet skis. The same damage scam as Pattaya. Marine police arrested operators at Kamala in 2025. Film the jet ski before you ride, or skip it.

  • Drinks. Don't leave yours unattended, especially on Bangla Road.

  • Tourist Police: 1155. 24 hours, several languages, and they handle taxi disputes too.

Book the Date

For a date in Phuket, the Promthep Cape sunset catamaran cruise is hard to beat. If you are still choosing where to stay, compare hotels in Phuket: Kata or Karon for the beaches, Patong to be near the nightlife.

We may earn a commission if you book through these links. It costs you nothing extra.
